What is Trauma?
It’s safe to say that at one point or another, all of us have felt stress in our lives. But what makes everyday stress different from trauma? Trauma refers to an event that overwhelms our ability to cope and respond. When we experience trauma, we feel helpless, hopeless, and out of control. And in that overwhelming moment we make a decision about ourselves, others, and the world that effects us being able to feel and live a life of freedom and satisfaction.
A person is traumatized when they can’t bring their mind and body back into balance after the event is over(can’t discharge the energy and bring equilibrium back to the body). In other words, if you experience a stressful event that you do not recover(finish, complete, or discharge), then that event is traumatic and it is held in the body until finished. Trauma accumulates if not resolved and is stored layer upon layer until we take the time to heal.
Understanding Trauma Matters.
As a source of long-term stress, trauma that remains unresolved can impact our physical, emotional, mental and behavioral state. For people who have experienced trauma, there can be long-lasting, chronic effects on how they think, feel, and behave, as well as on their overall health. Understanding how trauma shows up in the brain, and in the body, allows us to address its symptoms, such as depression and anxiety.
